About Me – Mateusz Konieczny

Mateusz Konieczny – A geographer and historian by profession, a fan of heraldry, genealogy and cartography, whose passion is painting coats of arms, family trees and maps. A self-taught artist, he took an interest in the art of painting 12 years ago, quite unexpectedly, but as it turned out, it was a hit, as his fascination combined with his patience give his handicrafts a certain uniqueness and exceptionality. Using a step-by-step method, the artist realised his successive works and ideas, which began to appeal to other people. This gave a signal and a reason for the creation of the website, showing the author's artistic workshop. You, too, can become the owner of such a work of art, giving it to loved ones, friends, acquaintances or simply keeping it for yourself.

I make the following handicrafts:

Coats of arms

Among the coats of arms which the author usually paints, we should mention family, town, land and sometimes state coats of arms, also in combination with heraldic and geographical maps. Coats of arms painted in the acrylic or watercolour technique are created on wood, canvas or watercolour paper, less often on handmade paper. This is complemented by the use of ink, which takes care of any text that appears. On request, the background of the coat of arms can be painted in any colour or left natural. The shape of the painting base can be rectangular, square or oval. Single coats of arms are usually painted in formats from A4 to A2. At the Client’s request, in the case of a larger number of coats of arms, the A1 format may be used.

All coats of arms are properly protected, e.g. with varnish. They can be specially aged. It is possible to place an additional inscription, motto or wreath under the coat of arms.

Coat of arms legends

Hidden in coat-of-arms legends is the origin of a particular coat of arms, e.g. Odrowąż, often based on a legend. This handicraft is usually made on watercolour paper or handmade paper. The sides and corners of the A3 are decorated with floral motifs. The coat of arms itself is usually located in the right-hand corner or in the centre. A large part is filled with text written in Gothic.

Coat of arms roles

Coat of arms roles are a set of from a dozen to even several hundred coats of arms arranged in various configurations, filling practically the entire surface of the material on which they are made. These are thematic sets of coats of arms, e.g. the coats of arms of the Polish nobility in Mazovia, the county coats of arms of Hesse or the coats of arms of towns in the Silesian Voivodeship. Other examples are the coats of arms of the royal families of Europe or the overseas territories of France. Coat-of-arms (collections) are usually executed on large formats (A2 to 2A0) of canvas or painting board using a mixed technique (acrylic, watercolour, tempera).

Family trees

Family trees, sometimes referred to as genealogical records, are some of the most popular handicrafts to decorate the interiors of homes, offices or offices. They are made using mixed techniques, usually watercolour and acrylic. They are an unusual and beautiful form of presenting family history, enriched with interesting content. They are produced in medium, large or extra-large formats ( from A3 to A0 or larger), depending on the number of family members. The design is complemented by additional elements such as a landscape in the background, the family crest, a map or the family home. The focal point is usually a tree with branches, branches and leaves, but it can also take the form of a fan. Coat-of-arms shields, ribbons, ovals or geometric figures contain information about family members (name, date of birth, date of death, degree of relationship). Due to the multitude of elements and the degree of complexity, the time for the creation of such a handicraft is determined individually with the client.

Heraldic maps

Heraldic maps are beautiful works of art, made in two versions. The first shows the map in the centre, with coats of arms painted around it and their names in Gothic script. If the subject matter concerns, for example, cities in a particular region or country, an additional element that fills such a map can be the inclusion of mini flags, positioned according to the geographical location of the city. The second version shows a map on which coats of arms have been directly applied. Heraldic maps are produced using mixed techniques on formats no smaller than A2, usually on canvas or painting board.

Battle maps

These unconventional handicrafts, find their audience among enthusiasts of the history of battles and wars. Producing them is a major challenge. The work consists of a map contained in the central part, on which the positions of the armies taking part in the battle are plotted. The map is enriched with a number of geographical elements (rivers, roads, buildings, vegetation, landmarks, etc.

Silhouettes of the military formations and the commanders themselves can be found on both sides, at the top of the craft. These can be complemented by coats of arms, the types of weapons used in battle and a description of the course of the war effort. Such maps are made using mixed techniques along with the addition of ink. The formats used for them start from A2 upwards. The material is usually canvas or painter’s board, sometimes wood or plywood. To give them a special character, they are often aged with a patina.

History of regions and cities

These handicrafts take us back to the chronological history of a city or region. They make excellent decorations in offices, offices as well as homes. They are an unusual gift for anyone who feels a strong bond with a particular place. They can take the most varied forms of presentation, ranging from a family tree-like account, a line diagram, a fan, or a framed text covering the most important events. The focal point may also be a painted coat of arms or a map of the city or region, with straight lines or branches imitating a tree. It can also be a wreath surrounding such a coat of arms or map, the leaves of which are filled with the dates of various events. The top or bottom of the work can be filled with a city skyline, a landscape or some object that represents a symbol of that place. The techniques used in such handicrafts are mainly acrylic and watercolour. The material can be canvas, painting board, watercolour paper or wood. These are usually large works, so a format of A2 and above is needed. The exception to this is a story in text alone, without other elements, where A3 format can be used.

Historical maps

Geogprahical maps

Geographical maps have always been of wide interest to a large group of cartography enthusiasts. They undoubtedly make a beautiful commemorative gift. Among the most popular geographical maps that the author paints are maps of the world with a breakdown by country, maps of continents, countries, regions, cities and often islands. Maps are painted using both a single colour and a whole range of colours. They often depict a variety of phenomena, such as administrative divisions or landforms, the river system, lakes and their barymetry, the course of mountain ranges and high points, as well as maps of plant formations and relief. Maps of countries, cities or regions with coats of arms next to them are very popular. In this case, the map is usually of a single colour, below which basic information about the place is contained in a frame. All maps are made using mixed techniques (acrylic, tempera or watercolour, less often oil), with drafting ink used for the inscriptions. The material on which they are usually created is canvas, painter’s board, watercolour paper, wood and plywood. Map formats start at A3 and above. The time to produce handicrafts of this type varies greatly due to the multiplicity and complexity. The end result compensates for the waiting time for the handicraft.

Fantasy Maps

Fantasy maps are another example of handicraft that appears in my studio. There are practically no limitations to them and their creation is based on my imagination. While drawing them, various scenarios, made-up names, map elements appear in my head, which make them impossible to repeat each time. I paint them primarily with black drawing ink, rarely applying other colors. They are created primarily on watercolor paper, less often on canvas or wood, in various sizes. At the same time, I am open to suggestions from the Client, who can give me some tips on the appearance of such a map, which was born in his thoughts somewhere along the way. The time to make them usually ranges from 2 to 6 weeks, depending on the size and detail.

Sports stories

In order to meet the expectations of clients with a broad interest in various sports, Arthekagen also produces this type of work. These may include, for example, the history of a sports club, the Olympic Games, the World Cup, national championships, rankings of the best athletes in a given sport, profiles and biographies of outstanding athletes, etc. Painting this type of work is sometimes very time-consuming, but the end result reinforces the conviction that such handicrafts are worth the time. Painting techniques are mixed. The material on which they are usually created is canvas, wood and watercolour paper. Drawing ink is used extensively due to the large amount of information. The smallest of the works are in A3 format.

My works are created from start to finish by hand. The painting techniques I use are mainly oil paint, acrylic paint and ink. Occasionally, I also use watercolour. When making drawings, I use pen and charcoal. Due to the great variety of handicrafts made, their degree of difficulty, detail and size, the waiting time for finished works varies from about 2 weeks to several months. Therefore, please place your orders well in advance. The order of submissions applies..

Throughout the whole process of painting, I am in constant contact with the client, and in the meantime, the next stages of the work are sent to the Client, in order to correct something, change something, etc. After receiving the order, I make a project, a sketch, a drawing (1-5 days), then I prepare the base on which the work will be done, and the next step is already painting the handicraft.

The final stage involves protecting the work with varnish and other chemicals, which can be aged with a patina to give a crackled effect.
